Sport in Belgium

Sport isn’t a big deal in Belgium with only around 13% of the Belgian population regularly involved in sports clubs. A wide variety of sports are popular in Belgium including the usual favourites such as football. The best result for the Belgian national side was when it came 4th in the 1986 FIFA Wold Cup.


Cycling is very popular in Belgium and is governed by the Royal Belgian Cycle League which sees the Dutch speaking WBV compete with the French speaking FCWB. Belgium is home to several highly successful cyclists and Belgium hosts some of the world’s best cycling races. Many Belgian cyclists have won one of the five monument cycle races with Belgian victories at the Tour of Flanders reaching above 60. The celebrated Tour de Flanders (Ronde van Vlaanderen) is watched on average by a million Belgians.


Tennis is very popular in Belgium and the nation has two famous champions. Justine Henin and Kim Clijsters were both ranked World number one players in the 2000’s. However both of them have now retired and Belgium is now looking for the next champion to put the nation back onto the world stage.
