American sports

Americans have a reputation for being extremely competitive and when it comes to sport they go into overdrive. Americans often dominate the leader board when it comes to the Olympic Games but when it comes to other international events they often don’t do as well. This is because the US doesn’t enjoy many of the same sports that others from around the world do. Soccer is not very popular in the states despite a growing interest, neither is rugby, cricket or Formula one. Instead Americans developed their own sports, ones that are rarely played at a professional level outside the USA. Here’s a look at some of the most popular sports in the United States.

American Football

American football is by far the most popular sport in the United States. Known within the States as simply football it has the largest number of participants of any sport at both the high school and college levels. The major football league in the US is the NFL or National football league, comprising of 32 teams it sees each team play 16 games per season with twelve teams being sent to the NFL playoff finals. Eventually the season culminates in the league championship game, the world famous Super Bowl.  Millions of people watch college football throughout the autumn with some college teams having massive support and even stadiums that rival some of the English soccer teams. Super Bowl Sunday is the biggest yearly sporting event held in the USA and is one of the most watched programmes in the US and around the globe.

Baseball and its variant softball are some of the most popular sports in the USA, but unlike American Football, Baseball is popular around the world and has a huge following in Japan and Cuba as well as other Asian countries and a growing following in Europe.

The US is home to the biggest professional baseball leagues in the world with the Major league Baseball teams divided into the National league and American league. Five teams from each league go into the playoffs culminating in the World Series.  The aim of the game is to score runs by hitting a thrown ball with a bat and touching a series of bases arranged at the corners of a 90-foot diamond shaped pitch.

Basketball is the third most popular sport in the USA and has a growing following in Europe and parts of Asia. The National Basketball Association (NBA) is the world’s premier basketball league and sees the best players from around the world compete. High school and college level Basketball is also extremely popular throughout the country even competing in State championships. Many high schools have their own gyms that can seat up to 5,000 spectators. Olympic Basketball is dominated by the USA and it’s no wonder seeing as NBA players are eligible to compete.
